Summer News & Summer Events Schedule

fizzSara has scheduled some great programs for the summer. The children’s programs are sponsored by a grant from Stewart’s. We are grateful for their support which allowed us to offer these events. Please register for all programs by visiting or calling the library or letting us know via Facebook. Don’t forget to like us! You can also follow the library Twitter feed for news and updates.

July 15 @ 6pm – TEEN PROGRAM: Teachin’ Teens to Crochet – limited space
July 22 @ 2pm – Bubble Trouble by Jeff Boyer – Collaboration with Brunswick Library and Poestenkill Summer Camp. This event will be held at the Poestenkill Fire House
July 24 @ 6:30pm – ADULT PROGRAM: CANCELED – to be rescheduled in the fall – Health & Wellness Class by Jan Hempstead, RN
August 1 @ 10:30am – Fizz! Boom! Read! – presented by the TANG Museum of Saratoga
August 7 @ 6:30pm – Paul Merklein Draws Super Heroes – see his YouTube video
August 14 @ 6pm – Paper Making – presented by Dyken Pond
August 28 @ 6pm – Tie-Dye Revisited! Due to the overwhelming success of the first Tie-Dye night (over 70 people) we will be doing it again. Limit of 1 item per person until the end of the evening. This will be the end of Summer Reading Celebration.

Other items of interest:
Clark Art Museum Pass is available for a 3-day loan. Good for 2 adult admissions.

miSci – Museum of Innovation & Science in Schenectady – passes will be given out at children’s programs, for as long as they last. Grossology – explore the (impolite) science of the human body – is the exhibit for the summer. See the link on the right for more details.

Algonquin Summer Reading books are available! There is a great selection so stop in early to get your first choice!

Cartoonist Draws Super Heroes – August 7th! There is still plenty of space!

Cartoonist Paul Merklein will draw Super Heroes at the Poestenkill Town Hall on Thursday, August 7th at 6:30pm. This free program is brought to you by the Poestenkill Library and Stewart’s Shops.


Mr. Merklein combines cartoons, comedy, and audience participation as he draws famous super heroes from comic books, TV, and movies. This will be a fun program. We hope you can join us!

Tie-dye Program – Thursday Night

tie dyeThis has become a fun annual summer event at the library! Please register for this program by calling or stopping in at the library. Or let us know through our Facebook page. Don’t forget to like us too!

Bring something to tie-dye. In past years we have seen socks, pajamas, tank tops, shorts, and even pillowcases! And of course, t-shirts!

We hope to see you there! This is an outdoor event.

4th Annual Leo B Clement Memorial Scholarship – increased to $500 & extended to 7/18

The Clement Family is generously increasing the scholarship award amount to $500 and extending the submission date to July 18, 2014.

The Poestenkill Library Board of Trustees is pleased to offer a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is a resident of Poestenkill and plans to enter a two- or four- year college program this fall. This is the fourth year this award has been offered.

The Leo B. Clement Memorial Scholarship is funded by a generous gift from Alma Clement in memory of her late husband. Mrs. Clement established this fund specifically for scholarship purposes to a high school senior who loves reading.


Entrants must:

1. Be a Poestenkill resident

2. Be a High School Senior (or equivalent) from a public , private, or home school who will be attending a two- or four- year college for the 2014-15 school year.

3. Write an essay of 500-750 words on the general subject of “The Love of Reading.”


Scholarship award will be chosen by a committee comprised of Mrs. Alma Clement, two Clement family members, the Director of Poestenkill Library, a Library Trustee, and a community member to be chosen by the Board of Trustees. The initial reading of essays will be completed without knowledge of the applicant’s name.

Announcement of Winning Essay:

The essay winner will contacted by August 1, 2014. The scholarship award will be announced on the Poestenkill Library website and in The Advertiser. The scholarship check for $500 will be awarded at the Poestenkill Library.


1. Essay must be between 500-750 words. Computer-generated is preferred.  No specific font or spacing is required. Applicant’s name should not be on essay page.

2. A cover page must also be submitted which includes the following:

Applicant’s name, address, and phone number

High School currently attending (or equivalent)

College attending in the fall

3. Essay should be submitted via email, mail, or in person at the library by July 18, 2014.
